In Chinese classes for working professionals, there is one point where drop-off rises sharply: the stretch between HSK 4 and HSK 5.
Not because learners get worse. Because the two levels measure different abilities.
HSK 4 measures recognition. HSK 5 measures processing
At HSK 4, most tasks are recognition: meet a word you studied, pick the right answer. A diligent learner can get here by memorising.
HSK 5 changes the rules. Vocabulary roughly doubles, but the harder shift is longer texts, more complex sentences, and reading passages that require inference rather than lookup. You stop being asked what a word means and start being asked what a paragraph implies.
For someone studying after work, that shock arrives exactly when motivation has worn thin.
Three things usually missing
Not enough reading. HSK 5 vocabulary does not stick from lists. It sticks from meeting the same word across many different contexts.
Ears not used to real speed. HSK 5 audio runs close to native pace. Anyone who has only practised with slowed textbook audio runs out of breath on the first item.
Writing skipped. Many learners tell themselves they only need listening and speaking for work. But the HSK 5 writing section tests precisely what makes speech coherent: word order and connectives.
How Mochina handles the transition
Mochina's HSK 5 to 6 classes are capped at six students — smaller than HSK 3 to 4 (capped at ten). Not to sell a premium package, but because at this level a teacher has to remember each person's recurring mistakes to correct them.
At least 40% of class time goes to real work situations — emails, meetings and reports in the learner's own industry. Vocabulary met in meaningful context outlasts vocabulary met in a list.
A progress note follows every four sessions, and an end-of-course note recommends the next HSK level — so the decision to continue or stop rests on data rather than a feeling.
How long to allow
There is no single right number. But there is a reliable signal: if you read an HSK 5 passage and grasp the main idea without looking up more than three words, you are ready. If not, more reading time will do more than more practice tests.
