"Which university?" is the wrong first question for many students. "Which field, and where does it lead?" often serves them better.

- You have a clear career direction (engineering, nursing, CS).
- The field has strong program-rank differences.
When to lead with school
- You're still exploring; a flexible liberal-arts college buys time.
- Network, location or cost outweigh a specific program.
