How the GMAT Focus Edition differs from the old format

The GMAT has moved to the Focus Edition. Plenty of material and courses still follow the old structure — and that is a real problem, not a technicality.

Three changes worth knowing

A three-section structure. Focus Edition covers Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning and Data Insights. The Analytical Writing Assessment is gone. Anyone still drilling GMAT essays is spending time on something that is no longer scored.

Data Insights is genuinely new. It is not Integrated Reasoning renamed. It tests reading tables, charts and several data sources at once — a skill closer to analytical work than to pure mathematics.

The scale changed. Focus scores do not convert directly to the old scale. The commonly cited equivalence is that 655 on Focus corresponds to roughly 700 on the previous scale — so when reading a school's requirement, check which scale they mean.

How the study plan should change

Time previously spent on the essay should move to Data Insights. If you come from an engineering background and are strong in Quant, this is usually where the total score moves most — because it does not reward fast arithmetic, it rewards careful reading of data.

And check the revision date on every resource you use. A book or course that does not state which version it follows is a signal to skip it.
